Jitsusoji Mountain Kojiro Cherry Blossom

Kojiro Yamataka

It is Furuki, the oldest cherry tree in Japan, said to be 2000 years old. It is one of Japan's three major cherry blossoms and is the first cherry tree registered as a nationally designated natural monument in Japan.
According to legend, Yamato Takeru (Yamato Takeru Nomikoto) stopped by this area when he was on an expedition to the eastern country and planted this cherry tree in commemoration. In 1922, it was designated as a national natural monument, and in 1990 it was designated as one of the "100 Best New Japan Trees". Although it has become smaller than the height of its peak due to natural disasters several times, it grows thick and powerful branches eastward, and the appearance of the trunk supporting them makes you feel "life".
